Kitchen Remodel Trends: From Roger Perron, Top Design Build Contractor in Los Angeles
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently released the results of their “Home Design Trends Survey” which focused on kitchen and bath design trends. The AIA notes that along with the housing boom, homeowner investment in their kitchens and baths remains a key interest, and kitchens in particular have solidified their standing as the center of operations within the home.
The residential architects surveyed reported very healthy business conditions at their companies. Architectural design work in the home improvement categories has enjoyed a significant recovery in the last few years. Design work for additions, alterations and remodels, as well as kitchen remodels in particular, is flourishing.
Some of the important issues for homeowners are energy efficiency, water conservation, healthy home concerns and easy accessibility – which are all reflected in the homeowner product choices for their kitchens.
Kitchens are increasing in size and there is a growing emphasis on pantry space and storage. Double islands in kitchens are increasing in popularity and kitchens are being focused on more for being the center of family gatherings and entertaining, as well as daily functions. Computer work is increasing in the kitchen and recharging areas are becoming more important.
Here is a summary of the changes in emphasis on various kitchen features from 2013 to 2014:
Popular kitchen products and features 2014 2013
LED lighting 88% 87%
Computer area/recharging stations 50% 37%
Larger pantry space 43% 42%
Upper-end appliances 35% 35%
Double Island 34% 29%
Drinking water filtration systems 31% 25%
